WA GOOD FOOD GUIDE

Wine is an elemental part of the WA hospitality experience, from eating and drinking to touring our world-renowned regions. The WA Good Food Guide Awards spotlight the breadth and diversity of both our wine talent and our regions. In the lead-up to this event, our panel blind-tastes, benchmarks, discusses, debates, and re-tastes over 280 Western Australian wines to arrive at a selection of the Top 25 wines of the year.

The WAGFG judging process openly poses the question to the judges, ‘would you drink this? Would you put your money on the line and buy this?’ Most importantly, ‘does this offer untold joy – is it delicious?’ These are not overly relevant questions in the traditional wine show system, but here they are paramount.

Technical perfection is not the driver of merit; personality, interest, appeal and deliciousness very much are. The WAGFG WA Wine of the Year offering is twofold: firstly, and most importantly, to the drinkers, for whom the Top 25 is a compelling resource of modern, relevant drinking options. A broad church of style; a place where all are welcome, and where charm and appeal are celebrated above all else.

From renowned wine journalists and critics to respected sommeliers, the panel represented a cross-section of wine knowledge and experience that was vital in evaluating the wines objectively. This collaborative approach allowed for thoughtful and balanced discussions, with each judge contributing their unique perspective on quality, innovation, and regional representation.

The goal was to shine a spotlight on the very best examples of Western Australian wine, and the judges delivered resoundingly. After rigorous tasting and evaluation, the top 25 wines were chosen with unanimous support, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship and terroir of WA’s diverse wine regions. These wines now stand as a testament to the state’s thriving viticulture and will undoubtedly capture the attention of wine lovers, both locally and beyond. This year’s judging panel brought together some of the most distinguished talents in the Australian wine industry, making for an exceptional selection process. The panel featured Leanne Altmann, Ray Jordan, Mike Bennie, and Nick Ryan, with co-chairs Erin Larkin and Emma Farrelly guiding the discussions. Each of these six esteemed wine professionals brought a diverse range of expertise to the table, ensuring that the judging process was carried out with the highest standards of integrity and fairness.

VINTAGE

2022

VARIETIES

Cabernet Sauvignon

REGION

Margaret River

Inky, bold and highly aromatic with mulberry, cassis, bay leaf and a distinctly saline, nori-like tang. Deeply concentrated with excellent palate saturation of plump, vibrant fruits managed by persistent powdery tannins. Freshness and elegance underscore the vivid texture, making it a beautifully poised expression of the region’s finest cabernet sauvignon.

VINTAGE

2023

VARIETIES

Riesling

REGION

Frankland River

The 2023 Frankland Estate ‘Isolation Ridge’ Riesling is a compelling combination of characterful personality and laser precision and focus. This single vineyard wine leads with the scratched lemon peel and crushed rock austerity of Frankland River and stains the palate in a texturally complex array of cheesecloth and chalk, beeswax, pressed flowers and preserved citrus. The saline acidity threads through the fruit, weaving the components together. Not only is this a wine for now, but it is also a wine for the cellar.

VINTAGE

2023

VARIETIES

Monastrell

REGION
